Search Dog School

Our Search Dog School teaches you to train and work your dog in whichever discipline you choose including:

-Tracking/trailing

-Area search

-Rubble

-Cadaver

-Article/evidence search

-Urban

We will develop a package for you and your dog based on your goals. In addition to scent work, you will learn advanced obedience, control exercises, and agility appropriate for a working search and rescue dog.

There are many aspects in training a called-out qualified search and rescue dog. It is important to start with the right dog for the job. The dog needs to be of correct size, structure, temperament, and disposition to do this potentially life-saving work. It must have the ability to focus and concentrate for extended periods of time and must be willing to work with the handler. We can get a great dog for you, or we are happy to help you choose the right dog for the job.

Puppies require great care while rearing to be a working dog. We will help build a puppy’s confidence, imprint a strong work ethic, develop a reward-based association, imprint manners, provide proper socialization, and help develop your puppy’s olfactory system.

You will be required to educate yourself on the different human skills required for search and rescue. We strongly recommend NASAR Sartech II certification as a minimum standard.

Training a search and rescue dog is not glamorous. It requires hard work at all times of the day and night in all terrain and weather conditions, often for extended periods of time. Although there is rarely any acknowledgement, it is rewarding. Search and rescue must be a self-driven desire that drives you to volunteer this service to others.
